48th Annual Scholarship Awards Program—$278,000 Awarded
The Phi Beta Kappa Alumni Association of Greater Houston held its 48th Annual Scholarship Awards Dinner on Monday, April 25, 2022 at the Royal Sonesta Houston Galleria. We awarded college scholarships to more than 65 outstanding graduating high school seniors.
Since 1972, the Association has awarded merit-based scholarships to students graduating from the full range of Houston-area secondary schools representing the vital diversity of our great city. Our program is nationally renowned because it makes a difference. The love of learning symbolized by Phi Beta Kappa has the potential to transform our society, and yet the challenge of affording a quality college education can be prohibitive–especially for gifted students of modest means. The opportunity to connect to these academically talented students and make a difference in their young lives is of utmost importance. Fostering a love of learning can make all the difference, for both the student and our society.

At our 48th Annual Scholarship Awards Dinner, we also honored David W. Leebron (Harvard College, ’75), president of Rice University, with the Outstanding Phi Beta Kappa Alumnus Award, and Y. Ping Sun with the Outstanding Contribution to Education Award. Our honorees have lifted the level of education, expanded the role of the Arts and Sciences, and helped make the City of Houston a Phi Beta Kappa City of Distinction. Mr. Leebron completed his 18-year tenure as president of Rice University in June 2022. We salute Mr. Leebron and Ms. Sun’s remarkable accomplishments during this era in the history of Rice University and the City of Houston.
Our Dinner Chairman was Andrew Davis. Davis is the Founding Dean of the Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts. He has been on the faculty of the Moores School of Music since 2003. In the profession and in the community at large, Davis is an active member of the National Association of Schools of Music, including that organization’s team of members that recommend accreditation actions for schools of music nationwide. Davis is an officer and has served as a director of Phi Beta Kappa Alumni Association of Greater Houston’s Board of Directors since 2013.
