Dr. Ted L. Estess Honoree, Outstanding Educator Award |
Save the date of Wednesday, April 22, 2026, 6:30 p.m. at The Briar Club. This year, we are proud to honor Dr. Ted L. Estess, Professor and Dean Emeritus of the Honors College at the University of Houston, with the Outstanding Educator Award. For more than four decades, Dr. Estess has enriched liberal arts education in Houston and across the nation. As co-creator of the transformative “Human Situation” course and founding dean of the Honors College, he has inspired thousands of students, colleagues, and supporters of higher education. We invite you to mark your calendar and join us in recognizing his extraordinary legacy and lifelong commitment to learning. The Annual Scholarship Awards Program remains the cornerstone of the Houston PBK Alumni Association. Since 1974, we have proudly awarded college scholarships to one outstanding student from each Houston-area high school—public and private alike. Following graduation, these remarkable young scholars have gone on to shape their communities with intelligence, creativity, and leadership. In 2026, we will once again present scholarships to more than 60 outstanding high school seniors, each representing the promise and excellence of our city’s future. As members of Phi Beta Kappa, we hold fast to the belief that “the love of learning is the guide of life,” and we are dedicated to fostering that spirit in the next generation. | Our Scholarship Awards Program helps dozens of outstanding Houston area students attend college each year. With my scholarship, I attended Prairie View A&M University where I graduated with honors with a B.S. in Physics. I have since gone on to get a PhD from the University of Michigan in Political Science and law degree from the University of Texas. I am now a full professor at the University of Michigan and the Director of the Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Prior to joining the faculty at Michigan, I was a professor of law at the University of Kentucky where among other leadership positions I was Director of the African American and African Studies program and the Humanities Center. I can say without question every scholarship dollar I received in the beginning gave me the opportunity to do all the things that come after. I am proud to have received this scholarship award. I am eternally grateful for the way your organization recognized my potential and I hope my achievements demonstrate why your efforts are so valuable. Melynda J. Price, High School for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice, '91
